A huge stretch of golden sand backed by the Braunton Burrows dunes, Saunton is one of North Devon’s top surf beaches. It’s great for beginners and experienced surfers, as well as swimming, bodyboarding, and long beach walks. Lifeguards are on duty in peak season, and the beach has excellent facilities nearby.

The Tarka Trail was inspired by the route that was travelled by Tarka the Otter, This trail continues for miles with unspoiled countryside, passing beautiful beaches and dramatic sea cliffs which is a breathtaking experience. The southern loop has the longest off-road cycle path which is perfect for walking or cycling in Braunton.

Braunton beach Crow Point is a magical beach as often not discovered by many guests until years of visiting as its tucked away and hidden from general view. Follow the toll road to find Braunton beach which is dog friendly.

The Braunton Great Field is one of only two surviving medieval strip field systems remaining in England and is believed to date back to the 1200's. Braunton Great Field covers an area of around 350 acres and here you can walk through the medieval landscape.

Braunton History

St Brannock

St Brannock an early Christain Saint landed at Saunton at the mouth of the River Taw during the 6th Century, he settled by the Caen stream, where he built the first church in Devon. During his time he gathered a sizeable following. The settlement grew up around the saint's church which was later changed to Braunton, and eventually to the current Braunton that we know of today. Braunton history has put this village on the map as it is also made famous for The Braunton Great Field, a medieval system of strip farming believed to be one of only two remaining in the country.
