The museum of British Surfing opened in 2012 and features a large collection of surfing memorabilia, surfing in North Devon has become a generational sport that is loved by many near and far it was definitely an attraction we had to feature high on our list of personal recommendations when visiting Braunton North Devon. 

A visit to Braunton is not complete without a trip to Crow Point, Often a Braunton beach that is overlooked by guests as it is not well known but is adored by many of the local community. Follow the American road to the toll road and discover Crow Point Beach which is at the southern tip of Saunton Beach. This sandy unspoilt beach looks across the River Taw to Instow and Appledore. Crow Point beach is also dog friendly so it is a sure winner for every type of holiday in Braunton North Devon.

The Tarka Trail was inspired by the route that was travelled by Tarka the Otter, This trail continues for miles with unspoiled countryside, passing beautiful beaches and dramatic sea cliffs which is a breathtaking experience. The southern loop has the longest off-road cycle path which is perfect for walking or cycling in Braunton. 

Braunton beach Crow Point is a magical beach as often not discovered by many guests until years of visiting as its tucked away and hidden from general view. Follow the toll road to find Braunton beach which is dog friendly. You're welcome !

The Braunton Great Field is one of only two surviving medieval strip field systems remaining in England and is believed to date back to the 1200's. Braunton Great Field covers an area of around 350 acres and here you can walk through the medieval landscape.

Cross tree glass, not just for adults but children as well, explore the art of glass blowing and creating your very own or if your not feeling artistic you could always buy a piece of local art to take home.  

 

We are lucky to have such a large diverse selection of Braunton shops here in North Devon, from the typical sea side stores to the more well known branded shops like Tesco, Co-op, Saltrock and Lloyds Pharmacy. You can find Braunton News shop on the corner by Caen car park, Pet shops for picking up the essential supplies, hair dressers and beauty salons. Homehardware in the centre of Braunton village is supplied by a well known family that has been in business for generations at Slees Braunton and has real community spirit.

The main car park in Braunton is right in the heart of the village at Caen Street, near to the Medical centre, The British Surf Museum and Tourist Information Centre. Caen car park provides good value car parking in Braunton.

Braunton History

St Brannock an early Christain Saint landed at Saunton at the mouth of the River Taw  during the 6th Century, he settled by the Caen stream, where he built the first church in Devon. During his time he gathered a sizeable following. The settlement grew up around the saint's church which was later changed to Braunton, and eventually to the current Braunton that we know of today. Braunton history has put this village on the map as it is  also made famous for The Braunton Great Field, a medieval system of strip farming believed to be one of only two remaining in the country. 

Braunton Burrows are originally named after the Normans the Braunton Burrows are one of the largest areas of sand dunes remaining in Great Britain and famous internationally for its picturesque walks, plants, wildlife and birds.
